Music

On campus you might find one of the many Spelman music majors in one of the choral and instrumental rehearsal rooms or music technology labs, temporarily housed in the Milligan Building and the Living and Learning Center II, practicing on or accompanied by a Steinway piano.

They might be practicing alone or in an ensemble, preparing for faculty audition or participating in the Glee Club or other activity.  Whether voice or instrument, the music department has a variety of performance ensembles for all music enthusiasts.

Other performance ensembles include AUC Orchestra, Spelman College Chamber Singers, Spelman-Morehouse String Quarter, and Spelman-Morehouse Wind Ensemble.

New Music Technology Concentration

The Spelman College Department of Music is thrilled to announce the launch of its new music technology concentration for music majors! Students who pursue the music technology concentration will receive hands-on studio experience working with industry-standard recording and production technology. Enrollment for this new, exciting program opens in Fall 2022. For questions or more information, contact Dr. Christina Butera at cbutera@spelman.edu.

What We Offer

Spelman offers courses of study in vocal performance, piano performance, instrumental performance (brass, woodwinds, percussion and strings), composition, choral conducting and music and education.

Its graduates have distinguished themselves in classrooms, communities, fine arts organizations, and on stages throughout the world.

Going All the Way With Steinway

Spelman College is the first historically Black college or university, to join a prestigious group of institutions designated as All-Steinway Schools. All-Steinway Schools are institutions that have made an agreement with Steinway & Sons, the oldest piano company in America, that 90 percent or more of the school’s collection of pianos will be Steinways.

The goal of the department, which has a faculty-student ratio of 4 to 1, is to prepare students for contributions and fulfillment after they leave, leading to professional careers in performance, scholarship, music education or related fields.
