Spelman Celebrates Commencement
Baccalaureate Marks New Beginning for Graduates
The Class of 2008 will be reminded of their call to change the world by scholar, author, community activist, and ordained minister Luther E. Smith, Jr., Ph.D., at Spelman's
Baccalaureate
service on Saturday, May 17, at 9 a.m. Dr. Smith is a professor of Church and Community at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta.
Sheila C. Johnson Inspires 
Spelman's Class of 2008
Renaissance woman Sheila C. Johnson, a philanthropist, media mogul, sports team president and owner, film producer and accomplished musician, will deliver this year's commencement address to more than 500 graduating seniors on Sunday, May 18, at 5 p.m., at the Cathedral at Chapel Hill in Decatur, Ga.


Spelman Awards Honorary Degrees and National Community Service Award at Commencement
Ingrid Saunders Jones, senior vice president of global community connections for The Coca-Cola Company and chairperson of The Coca-Cola Foundation, and Ernest G. Green, managing director of public finance for Lehman Brothers, will receive honorary degrees at Commencement. Erica Hunt, president of The Twenty-First Century Foundation, will receive the National Community Service Award.

Spelmanites Land Prestigious Rockefeller Fellowships
Lauren Williams, Malika Davis and Brittany Leonard, all class of 2009, have received the Rockefeller Brothers Fund's 2008 Fellowships for Aspiring Teachers of Color. Colleges were allowed to nominate up to three candidates, and Spelman and Brown University were the only schools to have all three candidates selected for the program.
'Dear Spelman' Rocks Reunion's Blue Note Theatre
This year's reunioners are in for a memorable treat when they return to campus on May 15-18. Blue Note Theatre on Saturday, May 17, at 7 p.m., will feature a special performance of "Dear Spelman: Letters That Changed the World." Conceived and directed by drama and dance professor Kenneth Green, "Letters" is a retrospective celebrating Spelman through music, dance and words.

President Beverly Daniel Tatum Addresses Student Loan Crisis
America's credit crisis is spreading and many banks are pulling back on student loans. President Tatum paints a poignant picture of what this means for Spelman students in the Atlanta Journal Constitution op-ed article, "Shield student loans from the eye of the storm."
