  • Leyte Winfield Receives 2015 Vulcan Award for Teaching Excellence

    Atlanta (August 25, 2015) -- Leyte Winfield, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of the Spelman College Department of Chemistry, has received the 2015 Vulcan Award for Teaching Excellence. Dr. Winfield was honored at Opening Convocation Aug. 20 during the Presidential Awards of Excellence presentation. The Vulcan Award recognizes outstanding teaching, mentoring, leadership and service to the College by a faculty member.

  • Spelman College Appoints New Vice President for College Relations and New Chief of Staff

    ATLANTA (August 11, 2015) – Spelman College recently announced two leadership appointments: Jane Smith, Ed.D., C’68, to vice president for College Relations, effective Aug. 10, 2015; and Helga Greenfield to chief of staff in the Office of the President, effective Aug. 15, 2015.

  • Artist Howardena Pindell Returns to Atlanta Aug. 25 for Solo Exhibition

    ATLANTA (August 6, 2015) – In November 1971, Spelman College hosted the first public exhibition of the paintings and drawings of Howardena Pindell. Since then, Pindell has become a pioneering artist, writer, curator and teacher. Some 44 years later, the artist returns with Howardena Pindell, a solo exhibition of her intricately layered mixed-media paintings and works on paper, on view at the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art from Aug. 25 to Dec. 5, 2015.

  • Dr. Mary Schmidt Campbell Assumes Role as Spelman College’s New President Aug. 3

    ATLANTA (August 3, 2015) – Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., begins her presidency at Spelman College on Aug. 3, just a few days before the accomplished Spelman class of 2019 arrives to start a densely packed week of new student orientation. Spelman’s Board of Trustees appointed Dr. Campbell as the 10th president of one of the nation’s top-ranked women’s colleges and the number one ranked HBCU. She succeeds Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum who retired after serving as president for 13 years.

  • Spelman College and SIT Study Abroad Host Summit on Improving Access to Study Abroad for HBCU Students

    ATLANTA (June 8, 2015) – SIT (School for International Training) Study Abroad, a program of World Learning, and Spelman College will host a summit focused on expanding access to high-impact study abroad opportunities for students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities on June 9. The first-of-its-kind event will include representatives from the White House Initiative on HBCUs, the U.S. Department of State, HBCUs and major foundations.

  • Cultural Vistas Administers STEM LAUNCH Study Tour of Germany

    ATLANTA (May 26, 2015) -- For the third consecutive year, Cultural Vistas will provide 16 students and four faculty members from Spelman College and Morehouse College with the opportunity to travel to Germany for two weeks, starting in May, to learn firsthand of global careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

  • CIEE Partners with Spelman College and Northeastern University to Launch Custom Study Abroad Programs for Undergrads in STEM Disciplines

    ATLANTA (May 22, 2015) -- CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange has partnered with Spelman College, a global leader in the education of women of African descent, and Northeastern University, a global, experiential, research university in Boston, to offer custom study abroad programs this spring with the goal to increase international education opportunities for students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

  • Leading Tech Experts Discuss Diversity and Leadership in the Digital Space at Spelman College Women of Color Conference May 13-14

    ATLANTA (May 8, 2015) -- In 2014, women accounted for only 26 percent of the computing workforce, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, when they made up 57 percent of the overall workforce. In addition, recent research identifies women as the lead adopters of technology. These statistics highlight the need for more women in the tech industry. Encouraging women to consider a technology career and examining how to elevate leadership strategies in the digital era are just two of the many topics speakers and honorees will address at the 11th Annual Spelman College Leadership and Women of Color Conference, May 13-14, 2015.

  • The Princeton Review Names Spelman College to Annual Guide to Green Colleges

    ATLANTA (April 22, 2015) -- The Princeton Review has named Spelman College as one of the most environmentally responsible “green” colleges in its “Guide to 353 Green Colleges: 2015 Edition.” Spelman is the first and only HBCU to be included in the guide, which profiles colleges with exceptional commitments to sustainability based on their academic offerings and career preparation for students, campus policies, initiatives and activities.

  • Spelman College Supports the Fight Against Sexual Assault of Women During Denim Day 2015

    ATLANTA (April 20, 2015) -- To help increase awareness and combat sexual violence against women, Spelman College will host a variety of events, April 20-24, in support of the global prevention and education campaign Denim Day 2015 and in recognition of National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, college-aged women ages 18 to 24 still experience among the highest rate of rape and sexual assault victimization compared to females in all other age groups.
