Congresswoman Nikema Williams Presents $437,000 in Funding for Increased Safety Measures at Spelman College

The Investment Will Strengthen Spelman's Campus Safety Infrastructure, Including Emergency Notifications, Perimeter Security and Access Controls


ATLANTA (August 27, 2026)  – Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) secured $437,000 in Community Project Funding for SAFE-SPEL, Spelman College’s Public Safety Department’s Advanced Framework for Ensuring Safety and Security on Campus.

Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05) said:

“As an HBCU alum, protecting our students, protecting opportunity, and investing in the next generation of leaders is personal for me.

After coordinated bomb threats targeting HBCUs across the county in September 2025, it’s imperative that we use these funds to strengthen campus safety through measures like upgraded community notifications, improved perimeter security, stronger campus access controls, and community education initiatives.

Strong campus security creates the kind of safe learning environment where students can succeed – because our students, faculty, staff, and surrounding community deserve to learn, work, and live in an environment where they feel safe and supported.”
