What's the Difference Between Brief Therapy and Same-Day Appointments?

At Spelman Counseling Center, we aim to meet students where they are—whether you're looking for quick support or ongoing guidance. Two of our most utilized services are ongoing brief therapy using a solution-focused model (BTSF) and same-day appointments. While they both offer valuable support, they serve different purposes.

Brief Therapy (Solution-Focused Model - BTSF)

What it is:
Brief Therapy using a Solution-Focused model is a structured, short-term approach that typically spans 3-6 sessions. It's designed for students ready to actively work toward specific goals with the help of a dedicated therapist.

What to expect:

  • A consistent therapist who helps you identify strengths and solutions
  • Focused discussions around a particular challenge or desired change
  • Goal-oriented strategies that empower you to take action between sessions
  • A brief but ongoing relationship to build momentum and see progress over time

Ideal for:
Students who want to work through an issue like academic stress, relationship challenges, or decision-making with a forward-thinking, solutions-based approach.

Same-Day Appointments

What it is:
Same-day appointments are one-time, drop-in sessions designed to provide timely support when you need to talk to someone right away.

What to expect:

  • A single session with an available therapist (not necessarily the same one each time)
  • Space to talk through a current stressor or emotional difficulty
  • Helpful coping tools, guidance, and resources for next steps
  • No commitment beyond the day's visit—just timely support when you need it

Ideal for:
Students facing a sudden challenge, feeling overwhelmed, or needing immediate support without entering ongoing therapy.

Which One Is Right for Me?

  • Choose Brief Therapy if you want structured, short-term support with clear goals and consistent sessions.
  • Choose a Same-Day Appointment if you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or need to talk through something today.

We're here to support your journey—whether it's one conversation at a time or a few sessions toward a better you.
