How do scholarships work at Spelman and how do I apply?

Your application for admission to Spelman also serves as your application for merit-based scholarships. There is no separate application you need to complete in order to be considered for scholarships.

Once you apply and are admitted to Spelman, you will be automatically considered for all merit-based scholarships available to first-year students. Scholarship decisions for incoming first-year students are made in the Office of Admissions, not the Office of Financial Aid. Thus, all questions concerning scholarship status and selection should be directed to admissions officials at 404-270-5193. If you are awarded a scholarship by Spelman, you will be notified at the time of admission.

What types of scholarships are available and what criteria do I need to have to receive a scholarship?

The merit-based scholarship process is competitive, but all admitted students are considered for scholarship based on a review of their applications. The Office of Admissions awards a limited number of merit-based scholarships to new incoming first-year students. Recipients are selected from a competitive pool of students based on the academic profile and details she submitted in her application.

Spelman does not require a separate application for merit-based scholarship consideration, nor do students need to request consideration. The committee considers those who demonstrate strong academic performance and engagement in high school. This determination is based on the grade point average, standardized test scores (if applicable), community service and leadership. All students will be considered for merit scholarships with or without standardized test scores. The official scholarship letter is included on the student’s SpelCheck portal alongside the digital acceptance letter.

The Bonner Scholarship, UPS Scholarship, and Ralph Lauren Scholarship are awarded outside of the Office of Admissions and will require a separate application for consideration. Students must apply for Early Action or Early Decision to be considered for any of the Civic Scholar Programs mentioned above.

Types of Scholarships

Academic Scholarship

The Academic Scholarship is awarded to students who embody a commitment to academic excellence. The scholarship includes the cost of one-half of tuition for the next four academic years, beginning the first semester.

Baldwin Richardson Foods Company Scholarship

Baldwin Richardson Foods Company Scholarship is awarded to students interested in Business and Entrepreneurship. The scholarship includes the cost of your tuition, fees, and the equivalent cost of room and board whether living on or off campus for the next four academic years, beginning the first semester.

Bonner Scholarship

The Bonner scholarship is a need-based scholarship and is awarded to students who have been admitted to Spelman College, and have displayed academic achievement and good citizenship in their community.

Dean's Scholarship

The Dean's Scholarship recognizes those who embody a commitment to service to humanity while maintaining academic distinction. The scholarship includes the cost of tuition for the next four academic years, beginning the first semester.

Dewitt Dean’s Scholarship

The Dean’s Scholarship covers full tuition only for four years.

Dovey Johnson Roundtree, Class of 38, Presidential Scholarship

The Dovey Johnson Rountree, Class of 38, Presidential Scholarship is awarded to twenty scholars who exhibit intellectual bravery and embody Spelman's creed to change the world. The scholarship includes the cost of tuition, fees, and the equivalent cost of room and board whether living on or off campus for the next four academic years.

Flanigan Scholarship

The Flanigan scholarship is a four-year scholarship for Georgia residents with preference given to graduates of Atlanta Public Schools. The number of awards vary per year and will be awarded based on financial need.

Gordon Zeto Scholarship

The Gordon Zeto Scholarship is awarded to stellar international students who embody the Spelman mission. This scholarship includes the cost of tuition, student fees, student health insurance, and the equivalent cost of room and board from August to May whether living on or off campus for the next four academic years, beginning with your first semester.

Joan B. Johnson Scholarship

The Joan B. Johnson Scholarship is awarded to students demonstrating academic distinction and interest in the STEM discipline. Selection as a Joan B. Johnson Scholar includes $25,000 towards the student’s direct costs for the next four academic years, beginning with the first semester.

Jonathan Smith Scholarship

The Jonathan Smith Scholarship was established to fund students throughout the state of Georgia to encourage an intimate, supportive, and engaged intellectual environment for young women through African American tradition of liberation. The scholarship includes the cost of tuition, fees, and the equivalent cost of room and board whether living on or off campus for the next four academic years. 

Karsh KIPP Scholarship

The Karsh KIPP Scholarship is a merit based scholarship that covers $20,000 toward the cost of attendance for the next four years. To be eligible, students must have attended and graduated from a KIPP High School.

Morgan Stanley Scholarship

The Morgan Stanley Scholarship was established to encourage an intimate, supportive, and engaged intellectual environment for young women through African American tradition of liberation. The scholarship includes the cost of tuition, fees, and the equivalent cost of room and board whether living on or off campus for the next four academic years. Additionally, Morgan Stanley Scholars participate in a multi-year mentorship and professional development program

Presidential Scholarship

The Presidential Scholarship is awarded to five scholars who embody a commitment to excellence and entrusts them with the responsibility of maintaining academic distinction. The scholarship includes the cost of your tuition, fees, and the equivalent cost of room and board whether living on or off campus for the next four academic years. 

Robert D. Flanigan Scholarship

The Robert D. Flanigan Scholarship is awarded to stellar students who will graduate from the Atlanta Public School system. The scholarship includes the cost of tuition, fees, and the equivalent cost of room and board whether living on or off campus for the next four academic years.

Student of Distinction Scholarship (SOD)

The Student of Distinction Scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, community service, leadership, and academic excellence while recognizes those who embody a commitment to service to humanity. The scholarship covers up to $10,000 of the student’s direct costs for the next four academic years, beginning with the first semester.
