Spelman Music Department Receives $10,000 Grant from Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective

The Spelman College Department of Music is proud to announce it has been awarded a $10,000 music equipment grant from the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective. This significant contribution is part of the Amazon Music "Your Future Is Now" HBCU initiative, a program dedicated to providing resources and professional pathways for students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
This generous support will directly enhance the department's technical capabilities, enabling students to refine their craft with state-of-the-art tools. "This support will enhance resources for our students as we continue to cultivate the next generation of artists and leaders," the department stated, emphasizing its commitment to excellence in music education.
Students Celebrate Grant with Industry Insights from PJ Morton and Jacquees
The celebration reached a high note on Wednesday, March 25, when Spelman music students were treated to a surprise visit from two titans of the industry. Grammy-winning Gospel artist PJ Morton and Atlanta’s own R&B star Jacquees joined the presentation to share their personal journeys and professional wisdom. The event served as a powerful reminder of the bridge between academic study and professional success, leaving students inspired by both the new technology at their fingertips and the mentorship of those who have paved the way before them.
New Music Technology Concentration
Music Technology is a concentration for music majors! Students who pursue the music technology concentration will receive hands-on studio experience working with industry-standard recording and production technology. What We Offer
Spelman offers courses of study in vocal performance, piano performance, instrumental performance (brass, woodwinds, percussion and strings), composition, choral conducting and music and education. Its graduates have distinguished themselves in classrooms, communities, fine arts organizations, and on stages throughout the world.
Going All the Way With Steinway
Spelman College is the first historically Black college or university, to join a prestigious group of institutions designated as All-Steinway Schools. All-Steinway Schools are institutions that have made an agreement with Steinway & Sons, the oldest piano company in America, that 90 percent or more of the school’s collection of pianos will be Steinways.
The goal of the department, which has a faculty-student ratio of 4 to 1, is to prepare students for contributions and fulfillment after they leave, leading to professional careers in performance, scholarship, music education or related fields.
