New Concentrations in the Mathematics Major

Beginning Fall 2026, the mathematics major will offer two new concentrations: Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. These concentrations give students the opportunity to align their elective coursework with their academic interests, plans for graduate study, or career goals. Students may also choose to remain in the general Mathematics major without declaring a concentration.

A Change to the Major Requirements

Beginning Fall 2026, the requirements for the major will also change slightly.

  • Students who declare a concentration will no longer be required to take Abstract Algebra II (SMAT 472) or Real Variables II (SMAT 464) as part of the major requirement.
  • Students who remain in the general Mathematics major will be required to complete one of the following:
    • Probability and Statistics I (SMAT 455)
    • Real Variables II (SMAT 464)
    • Abstract Algebra II (SMAT 472)

Declaring a Concentration

Students may formally declare a concentration beginning in the spring of their freshman year, though they are encouraged to do so no later than the end of their junior year. Before declaring, students should meet with their mathematics advisor to discuss their academic plan. Students then complete the Concentration section of the Change of Major/Minor form in eTrieve.
