Toni Shavers in Deputy Chief of Police at Spelman College. She became the Department of Public Safety's first female captain in 2017. In her role, she supervises approximately 30 police and security staff in carrying out police and security operations and conducting investigations.
“Spelman is where my heart is, which is why I returned after retiring from the MARTA police department,” she said.
Deputy Chief Shavers first joined Spelman’s Department of Public Safety in 1989 and rose to the position of being its first Black female lieutenant. She accepted a position with MARTA in 1997 but continued as a part-time training instructor at Spelman until 2007.
Captain Shavers credits her long-term police force career to an appreciation of the structure of law enforcement and the opportunity it gives her to make a difference.
