Tamara "Tammy" Spikes, M.S., C'2017, is an adjunct professor in the Environmental and Health Sciences Department at Spelman College in Atlanta, GA.
Spikes is an experienced environmental professional with a diverse background spanning the healthcare, public utility, and education sectors. She brings extensive expertise in data collection, environmental compliance, hazardous waste management, and infection control. Her work in environmental monitoring supports both workplace safety and community health, with a focus on practical solutions and long-term impact. Tammy has applied her knowledge in Environmental Health, Environmental Science, and Sustainability to advance healthy housing initiatives for residents across Atlanta. In addition to her professional accomplishments, Tammy is a passionate advocate for Environmental Justice.
Spikes has led and contributed to numerous community-based research projects aimed at raising awareness and deepening understanding of health and environmental justice issues across Georgia. Her research includes mixed methods approaches to evaluating environmental and geographic inequalities affecting marginalized communities in Atlanta. She has also facilitated community-engaged learning experiences that promote equity, inclusion, and representation in the environmental sciences and broader STEM fields.
Spikes brings over seven years of combined teaching experience at Spelman College, Georgia State University, and Kennesaw State University. She has educated and mentored students in Environmental Health, Public Health, and Sustainability, fostering the next generation of changemakers.
