Stephanie Bryd, Ed.D., is the manager of Undergraduate Research Initiatives and Post-Graduate Pathways. A seasoned higher education professional with 20 years of service at Spelman College, Dr. Byrd brings extensive expertise in undergraduate research, student development, and student success strategies that empower students to reach their highest potential.
She holds a B.S. in biology from Albany State University, a master of science in management from Troy University, and an Ed.D. in Leadership with a concentration in Higher Education Administration from Trevecca Nazarene University. Her dissertation, titled “Unveiling the Untold Stories: Exploring the Lived Experiences of Black Women with STEM Doctoral Degrees,” reflects her deep commitment to equity, representation, and student achievement in advanced education.
Dr. Byrd previously served in the roles of associate director, assistant director, and program manager of the long-standing RISE (Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement) program until its termination in 2025 due to shifts in federal administration funding priorities. As a core member of the leadership team, she helped shape RISE into a nationally recognized model for inclusive, cohort-based research training and graduate school preparation. Funded by the National Institutes of Health, the program contributed significantly to the training of Black women scientists at Spelman for 25 years, with over 80% of scholars entering graduate school directly upon completion.
In her current role, Dr. Byrd is focused on scaling the proven practices exemplified by students participating in RISE across all academic disciplines—integrating scaffolded cohort-building, mentored research, and career readiness initiatives to enhance student success and expand preparation for graduate and professional pathways.
She will also lead efforts to develop credentialing systems—including certificate programs and digital badges—that recognize and validate student engagement in research and professional development experiences. Dr. Byrd collaborates with academic departments and institutional partners to ensure students are equipped with the skills, confidence, and competitive edge needed to thrive beyond graduation.
Her passion lies in supporting students holistically—academically, personally, and professionally—to help them uncover their strengths, overcome obstacles, and reach their full potential. Her unwavering commitment to student success continues to drive her passion as a mentor, advocate, and leader in higher education.
