Fernando Esquivel-Suarez, PhD conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of drug policy, racial justice, and cultural representation. His work critically examines the impact of drug enforcement policies on marginalized communities in the United States and Latin America, using data analysis, community-based collaboration, and narrative critique. He partners with grassroots organizations and international researchers to collect and visualize data on narcotics-related arrests and convictions, and he employs his expertise in grant writing to support initiatives that promote equity in drug policy. Dr. Esquivel-Suarez also develops curriculum and scholarship that explore how communities of color are portrayed in cultural narratives surrounding the war on drugs and substance use, with a focus on challenging harmful stereotypes and envisioning alternatives rooted in harm reduction. His work is committed to advancing justice through rigorous research, transformative pedagogy, and public engagement.
