Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Edwin “Pete” Varner is the embodiment of dedication, leadership, and team spirit. A proud graduate of Grady High School and an avid fan of the Falcons, Braves, and Hawks, Pete brings the same passion to his work as he does to his hometown teams.
Pete has been a vital part of Spelman College for 19 years, beginning his journey in 2006 as a mail clerk. His commitment and drive quickly propelled him to the role of expeditor, and after mastering that position, he rose to become the Facilities Coordinator—a role he continues to embrace with enthusiasm and excellence.
In his current position, Pete leads with integrity and communicates effectively with both internal and external stakeholders. He oversees campus operations and plays a key role in coordinating and assisting the Facilities Management Services (FMS) staff with event setup, breakdown, and cleanup. His attention to detail and unwavering commitment ensures that every event runs smoothly and every space is well cared for.
Pete’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. He was honored with the UnSung Hero Award from 2013 to 2016 for his heroic performance and exceptional people skills. His ability to foster strong working relationships led to him and a colleague receiving the Duo Award—a testament to his collaborative spirit.
Now, Pete has earned the prestigious True-Blue Award, recognizing his exemplary service and tireless work ethic. He approaches every task with excitement and a clear goal: customer satisfaction. His motto is simply never leave a job incomplete. His team knows they can count on him for encouragement, motivation, and a strong sense of unity.
