Beinecke Scholarship Program

Scholarships are awarded for the graduate education of undergraduate students of exceptional promise to pursue opportunities available to them and to be courageous in the selection of a graduate course of study in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Students apply in their junior (third) year of college study.

How to Apply

Complete the Domestic Competitive Awards Eligibility form. Once your eligibility is confirmed you will be sent a link to the Prestigious Awards Canvas page where you will submit your application materials, listed below, by the fourth Monday in October. You are encouraged to work with a Faculty Mentor during the application process.

Your application materials should be uploaded to the Beinecke section of the Prestigious Awards Canvas page as PDFs and must include:

  • The completed Beinecke application form (access on the Beinecke website).
  • A personal statement, including a head shot (see guidelines below).
  • A current resume.
  • A copy of your unofficial transcript.

Recommendations

  • Three letters of recommendation must be from current or former college faculty/instructors. You provided recommender information on the eligibility form, and they will receive a link from us to upload their recommendation letter. Please confirm their ability to provide a letter on your behalf and let them know the letters are due the last Friday in October. Applicants do not manage the recommendation process.

 
Interviews

  • Interviews are scheduled in early November. The Spelman Committee can advance only one (1) applicant for the scholarship. DO NOT contact the Beinecke directly regarding the scholarship.

Personal Statement Guidelines:

  • A statement of 1,000 words or less from the nominee devoted to describing their research or creative interests for graduate study and career aspirations beyond these studies. It should also include a discussion of the most relevant academic, professional, extracurricular, and personal experiences that have influenced or shaped the nominee’s interests and plans.
