Arthur Liman Public Interest Summer Fellowship

The Liman Summer Fellowship gives sophomores and juniors the opportunity to work at substantive summer internships in the field of public interest law/social justice. Students have worked with advocacy groups and lawyers in areas such as: children’s rights, immigrants’ rights, workers’ rights, prison conditions, low-income housing, health and environmental policy, gender equality and educational adequacy.

How to Apply
Complete the Domestic Competitive Awards Eligibility form. Once your eligibility is confirmed you will be sent a link to the Prestigious Awards Canvas page where you will submit your application materials, listed below, by the third Monday in January. You are encouraged to work with a Faculty Mentor during the application process.
Your application materials should be uploaded to the Liman section of the Prestigious Awards Canvas page as PDFs and must include:
- Personal statement/reflective essay (see guidelines below)
- Description of two (2) organizations you intend to contact for summer placement. Please discuss why you have selected these organizations (DO NOT provide a generic company and/or intern job description)
- Copy of unofficial transcript
- Current resume
Recommendations
- Two (2) letters of recommendation (one from a Spelman professor, and the other can be from a supervisor if you have worked/interned with a public interest/social justice organization). You provided recommender information on the eligibility form, and they will receive a link from us to upload their recommendation letter. Please confirm their ability to provide a letter on your behalf and let them know the letters are due the last Friday in January. Applicants do not manage the recommendation process.
Interviews
- Interviews are scheduled in early February. Scholars are selected by the Spelman Committee ONLY. DO NOT contact the Liman Foundation/Yale Law School directly regarding the fellowship.
Personal Statement Guidelines:
Your Liman Fellowship Statement of Purpose should be a reflective essay not to exceed two double-spaced pages (in Times New Roman 12 pt.) describing your desire to work in public interest law or with a social justice organization; making connections to any relevant experience(s). The essay should do more than recite activities from your resume. Please also include your assessment of how the summer internship will impact your post-graduation goals. Please attach a picture of yourself in the upper right-hand corner of your statement of purpose.
