Getting Started in Research

How to begin Research

Step 1: Identify Your Interests
Think about the subjects, questions, or issues that genuinely excite you, whether in or outside your major. Reflect on class topics, social issues, creative ideas, or future career goals to guide your focus.

Step 2: Explore Opportunities
Visit the Undergraduate Research and Training Programs Unit or website to learn about available programs, projects, and faculty research. Look into funded opportunities, summer programs, or courses with a research component.

Step 3: Connect with Faculty
Reach out to professors whose work aligns with your interests. Attend office hours, ask thoughtful questions, and express your desire to get involved. ForagerOne is also a great resource for connecting with faculty.

Step 4: Develop a Research Question or Join a Project
If you're starting your own project, work with a mentor to develop a strong, focused research question. Alternatively, you can join an existing project to gain experience and contribute to ongoing research.

Step 5: Apply and Get Support
Complete any required applications or proposals. URTP can help you with forms, funding, ethics approvals (like IRB), and finding a mentor.
