Spotlight on Pre-Health Summer Scholars
Kandace Bryant: Future Physician-Scientist
Kandace Bryant is a rising sophomore Health Science major with a concentration in Pre-Medicine on the MD/PhD path at Spelman College. She is a member of the Ethel Waddell Githii Honors Program and an Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Scholar. She aspires to become a physician-scientist through an MD-PhD program, specializing in neuroscience with a focus on neurodegenerative diseases and brain cancer. Her goal is to advance research that addresses health disparities in underrepresented communities while providing compassionate care to patients. Upon completion of this program, she plans to complete a 7-year neurological surgery residency to become a board certified and practicing neurosurgeon while running her own research lab catered to Black girls and women with similar interests.
Bryant is currently an Undergraduate Cancer Health Equity Research Intern at Morehouse School of Medicine, conducting research on glioblastoma multiforme and racial disparities in survival outcomes. She is also a Williams-Franklin Foundation Scholar, accepted into Dr. Daniel Ashley’s computational chemistry lab, and CPR/AED and QPR (suicide prevention) certified.
Bryant chose to be an RA/TA to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for incoming students. “I wanted to be someone they could turn to as they transition into college life, especially during the summer when many are preparing for the school year ahead,” she said. “Having the same major and similar future career as many of them, I wanted to directly connect with them, share resources, offer guidance, and simply be someone who can continue to help spark their interest in health careers.”
