HCOPPP Scholar: Zaria Griffin

Innovation and Impact in the Healthcare Field

Zaria GriffinZaria Griffin, C'2025, is a proud first-generation college student and an aspiring physician-scientist dedicated to advancing health equity. Griffin earned a bachelor of science in psychology on the pre-medicine track with a minor in Spanish. As a member of Health Career Opportunities Pipeline Preparation Program (HCOPPP), Griffin demonstrated academic excellence and a deep commitment to research, healthcare, and advocacy.

Her research experiences span multiple disciplines within public health and medicine. As a Rackham Aspiring Fellow at the University of Michigan, she conducted a mixed-methods study investigating the link between talcum powder use and ovarian cancer risk in Black women. Through the Summer Research Opportunity Program, she explored the impact of air pollution on preterm birth rates, reinforcing her dedication to environmental justice and maternal health. Additionally, her work with the University of Michigan Center for International Reproductive Health Training allowed her to engage in global health research, navigating challenges in implementing software solutions for researchers in Uganda, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe. These experiences have strengthened her adaptability, data analysis skills, and cross-cultural competency in health research.

Beyond research, Griffin is a dedicated mentor and leader. As a first-year study group leader and major Meet-Up guide, she has supported and guided incoming students through academic and personal challenges. Her journey at Spelman has been one of resilience and perseverance. Griffin’s passion for bridging the gap between medicine, public health, and education fuels her aspirations to pursue an MD-Ph.D. in public health, specializing in health behavior and education. As an HCOPPP scholar, she is eager to continue expanding her knowledge, engaging in hands-on research, and contributing to the future of accessible and equitable healthcare.
