Advocating for Underserved Communities

HCOPPP Scholar Mae JohnsonMae Johnson, C'2027, is a dedicated second-year health sciences major on the pre-physician assistant track at Spelman College. She aspires to become a physician assistant specializing in maternal health, with a vision to improve patient outcomes and ensure equitable access to quality care for all women. As a proud Health Careers Opportunity Program Pipeline Preparation (HCOPPP) scholar, she is passionate about advancing health equity and advocating for underserved communities, particularly in maternal health.

At Spelman, Johnson has actively engaged in academic and service-based initiatives that align with her career goals. She serves as a Labor and Delivery Support Volunteer at Emory Decatur Hospital, providing hands-on assistance to expectant mothers and gaining invaluable exposure to clinical environments. Through her participation in the inaugural class of Lamis Women’s Health Leadership Institute, Johnson has worked to address issues such as Black maternal mortality and reproductive justice within the community.

In addition to her volunteerism, Johnson is committed to academic excellence and leadership. As part of her HCOPPP experience, she has strengthened her skills in patient-centered care, cultural competency, and health advocacy. These experiences have deepened her interest in addressing health disparities and prepared her to become a transformative leader in the healthcare field.
