Jaya Peterkin, C’2025, is an HCOPPP Scholar dedicated to improving healthcare access in underserved communities. Peterkin, a Florence, South Carolina native, has conducted cancer research through Columbia University’s YES in the HEIGHTS Program, where she studied the role of Msi2-Myc in pancreatic cancer subtypes. She presented her findings at national conferences such as ABRCMS, reflecting her commitment to research and addressing health disparities.
While at Spelman, Peterkin excelled academically while actively participating in student leadership, peer mentorship, and community outreach. She organized health education workshops, supported wellness initiatives on campus, and volunteered with programs focused on preventive care in underserved populations.
Peterkin plans to attend Georgetown University in the fall to pursue a master of science in integrative medicine and health sciences. Her goal is to become a physician who combines traditional and holistic approaches to provide compassionate, community-centered care.
