Economics Professor Dr. Angelino Viceisza Nominated for AEA Leadership Position
The Nomination Further Enhances Spelman’s Reputation With the AEA
Spelman’s economics professor, Dr. Angelino Viceisza, has been nominated for a top position within the American Economic Association (AEA). The AEA was incorporated in 1923 as a nonprofit, nonpartisan, scholarly association. This nomination follows the department's recent award from the AEA in January. On its website, the AEA boasts more than 17,000 members from academia, government, and business committed to advancing economics and its enduring contributions to society.
The AEA publishes leading scholarly research through journals such as the American Economic Review and Journal of Economic Perspectives. It also holds the Allied Social Science Associations (ASSA) meeting each year, in conjunction with 66 other associations. As the AEA’s governing body, the Executive Committee plays a significant role in shaping the economics profession and enhancing its impact on society. According to AEA records dating back to 1958, Dr. Viceisza is the first person to be nominated for the AEA Executive Committee while concurrently serving as an HBCU faculty member.
“This nomination further enhances Spelman’s reputation as a powerhouse of research, teaching, and service in economics and related fields. Beyond setting an aspirational standard for Spelman faculty and students, this recognition highlights the power of HBCUs broadly to shape the field of economics and drive meaningful change in society,” Dr. Viceisza said. “A colleague at a reputable research institution framed it as follows: “This is a great vote of confidence from a very diverse group of our professional colleagues. The AEA would benefit from your good judgment and wisdom!”
Dr. Marionette Holmes, chair of the economics department, commented on the nomination, “It’s rare that people from teaching-intensive colleges and universities are nominated for such roles. This is a feather in Spelman’s cap!”
If elected as an AEA executive committee member, Dr. Viceisza plans to help the association strengthen and position the profession during this crucial moment. His past engagement with the AEA has included publications in AEA journals such as Journal of Economic Perspectives and AEA Papers and Proceedings. He has contributed to more than ten presentations at ASSA meetings and served on committees such as the Committee on the Status of Queer Individuals in the Economics Profession and the AEA Task Force on Outreach to High School and College Students. He has also received recognition as an AEA Summer Economics Fellow to visit the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston in 2014.
“As science and academia face volatile times in this current environment/economy, the contributions of economics to society have never been more vital. Economics thrives when talent is nurtured and opportunities are accessible – this belief has guided my career, driving my efforts to open doors for others and advance policy through research,” Dr. Viceisza said.
