Danielle Barnes, C'971. Alumna Trustee Interest Statement

Serving as a Spelman Alumnae trustee is both a profound honor and natural extension of my lifelong commitment to leadership, service, and advancing opportunities for women. Spelman College shaped me into the leader I am today, laying a strong foundation for helping me gain a sense of purpose, identity, and responsibility to my community.

My time at Spelman allowed me to understand myself at my core. During that time, I was able to take away all the identifiers, like race, gender, and socioeconomic status. The institution then poured into me, giving me leadership opportunities, like the student government association and the sorority. I discovered the meaning of true sisterhood and a greater respect for tradition. I also found the strength to think independently and to use that power for the benefit of others.

With that foundation, I have been able to lead with a focus on community impact, organizational excellence, and empowering others to rise. Whether in my role as CEO, as a corporate board member, or through my civic engagement, I have consistently worked to create pathways for growth, amplify underrepresented voices, and drive meaningful change. These experiences have equipped me with the strategic insight, governance perspective, and collaborative leadership necessary to contribute effectively at the trustee level.

This is an opportunity to align my experience, passion, and purpose to give to the institution that I hold dear. I am passionate about supporting sustainable growth, strengthening alumni engagement, and ensuring that Spelman remains the premier institution for black women.2. Engagement with Spelman as Advocate, Donor and Volunteer

I have sustained long-term, hands-on engagement with Spelman as an advocate, donor, and volunteer focused on advancing the College's cultural, educational, and community missions. I supported the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art during its infancy, including participating in one of the Museum's inaugural travel abroad programs to Cuba in 2011, and thereafter remained a committed donor to the Museum, because I believe deeply in elevating Black women's artistic voices and global cultural exchange.

As a mentor, I have advised and supported incoming and current students across the country, most significantly in Atlanta, Nashville, and Southern California, helping students navigate academic choices, career pathways, and professional development. I have been an active alumna leader in Spelman College Alumnae Association activities in Atlanta, Columbus, and Southern California, regularly participating in community outreach, fundraising, and reunion events to strengthen alumnae networks and advance the College's priorities.

Beyond Spelman's specific work, my volunteer leadership in nonprofit fundraising and civic organizations exemplifies and advocates for the College's mission of service and civic engagement. These sustained contributions, financial, advisory, and operational, reflect my belief that alumnae stewardship is both a responsibility and an opportunity to expand access, support its focus areas, and ensure Spelman’s long-term vitality.

2. Engagement with Spelman as Advocate, Donor and Volunteer

As a donor, I give with intention and consistency. I recognize that philanthropy is critical to sustaining access and opportunities for future generations. My contributions are auto-deducted monthly and reflect my gratitude. With the passion and love for my college, I have also identified Spelman in my estate planning and continue to share the importance of giving back, regardless of the level. As a nonprofit leader, I understand the value and importance of every donation and encourage others to support this giving.

As a volunteer, I use my talents to support initiatives that strengthen the Spelman community. Most of this work is done on the local level, where I engage with the Nashville alumni association, mentor students, or contribute to outreach efforts. I am always available to serve as an advocate for the institution, through recruiting fairs or one-on-one conversations. Truthfully, my favorite event is the annual college send-off.

As an advocate, I am unstoppable! I actively share Spelman's story and impact in every space I occupy. I promote the value of an HBCU education, encourage prospective students to consider Spelman, and proudly represent the college's legacy of excellence and leadership.

My stewardship, advocacy, and support taken together represent my holistic approach to giving back and my undeniable commitment to Spelman. I am not only invested in Spelman’s legacy, but I am also actively working to help shape its future.

3. Personal and Professional Experience

Professionally, I have led organizations and teams with a focus on vision, accountability, and results. As an employment lawyer, I bring a strong emphasis on people, governance, and regulatory insight. Serving as Commissioner for the Tennessee Department of Human Services, I led an agency supporting more than two million vulnerable citizens, deepening my understanding of community needs while maintaining a strong focus on service delivery and measurable outcomes. Leading a large government agency also strengthened my ability to navigate intense political, media, and public pressures with clarity and discipline.

My experience with Ernst & Young sharpened my consulting capabilities, equipping me to address complex challenges across diverse environments using data, technology, and practical, scalable solutions.

Currently, as CEO/President of the Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee, I lead organizational change in a dynamic environment, balancing innovation with a deep respect for tradition while expanding access and impact for girls.

As a corporate board member, I bring strong governance practices, financial oversight, and strategic planning. Through my work with Truxton Trust, I have developed the ability to provide independent, mission-aligned leadership that drives performance and long-term sustainability.

Equally important is my commitment to philanthropy and community service. Through leadership roles, including with the Jack and Jill of America Foundation, I have gained national experience in fundraising and fiduciary responsibility.

Collectively, these experiences have equipped me with a broad and effective set of competencies to lead and serve with impact.

4. Initiatives to Promote Spelman to the Outside Community

Promoting Spelman is easy when you love your school as much as I do! My commitment to promoting Spelman has been intentional, consistent, and grounded in pride. I utilize every platform available to me, professionally and personally, to elevate Spelman's reputation and impact. I actively share Spelman's story, highlighting academic excellence, leadership development, and the transformative outcomes of its graduates. Even in small moments, such as when someone comments on my college paraphernalia, I make it a point to underscore the positive work that Spelman is doing for her students and graduates.

I support student recruitment by engaging directly with prospective students and families. Whether through informal mentorship, speaking engagements, or participation at community events, I make it a priority to highlight Spelman’s legacy. Through my leadership roles, I have created opportunities to partner with organizations that align with Spelman’s mission, such as the Jack and Jill Foundation. I also actively engage with fellow alumnae, encouraging participation, philanthropy, and collective advocacy.

These efforts reflect my belief that promoting Spelman is a shared responsibility. I remain committed to amplifying her voice, strengthening her presence, and ensuring its continued excellence and influence.
