Weather Advisory: Winter Storm Expected Jan. 24-25

A Message from Spelman Public Safety

Dear Spelman Community:

A major winter storm is expected to impact North and Central Georgia beginning Saturday, January 24. The current forecast suggests heavy snow and freezing rain on Saturday and Sunday. Freezing temperatures are expected through the beginning of next week.

Based on the current forecast, these conditions could potentially result in power outages, hazardous travel, and other weather-related disruptions.

Campus Closed – Jan 24 and 25

Due to inclement weather conditions and for the safety of our students, faculty, and staff, the AUCC Inclement Weather Team has elected to close the AUC Campuses on Saturday, January 24, and Sunday, January 25th, 2026. This includes all campus activities, meetings, and sporting events. Please continue to check Spelman’s homepage, email, and social channels for updates regarding Monday, January 26, 2026.

As we continue to monitor these weather updates, we are implementing the following temporary measures to prioritize the safety of our campus community:

  • Safety Guidance
    • Avoid outdoor activity and unnecessary travel during the storm
    • If you must be outdoors, dress in multiple layers to avoid hypothermia (when the body loses heat faster than it produces heat).
    • Limit outdoor exposure to ~ 40 minutes with a 10-minute warm up time.
  • Facilities and Emergency Support
    • In case of support with facility maintenance or an emergency, please contact Public Safety (404.525.6401 or 404.525.6402). Facility requests will be routed to the on-call Facilities Management Services (FMS) staff.
  • Dining Services
    • Upshaw Cafe will be open during normal weekend business hours.
    • Spelman After Dark (BDT Suites) will be closed Friday, January 23 – Sunday, January 25.
    • Retail dining will be closed Saturday, January 24 and Sunday, January 25.
    • Normal dining operating hours will resume on Monday, contingent upon campus operation changes.

We will continue to share updates as weather conditions evolve. We encourage you to monitor the National Weather Service and local trusted media outlets. Campus operational updates will come directly from official Spelman Communications outlets.

We appreciate your cooperation as we continue to monitor the weather forecast.

Sincerely,
