Gustavo Segura, Ph.D. Faculty Member Since 2021 and is a Lecturer for World Languages and Culture.
After completing his B.A. in English literature in his home country, Chile, Dr. Gustavo Segura decided to pursue his graduate education in the US, earning his master’s degree at the University of Notre Dame and a Ph.D. at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Segura’s research focuses on the intersection of media and memory in 20th-century Chile. He analyzes historical events and their reenactments in different media (literature, film, television and theater), highlighting the role of each medium in the transmission of memory — a phenomenon that is not simply person-to-person but that is aided by a medium that inevitably conditions memory.
He aims to understand how media not only alter the past, but also our very own idea of the past, by exploring how each medium recreates memories through sounds, images, sensations, words and gestures that become integral to how we remember the past.
