Fall 2026 | DANCEATSPELMAN | October 16-18, 2026
Theme: "Rooted in Movement, Freed by Dance”
A tribute to how dance connects the Black diaspora to our heritage while making space for radical self-expression, boundary-breaking, and forging nuanced pathways into our futures. DANCEATSPELMAN delves into the profound bond among movement, identity, and freedom, celebrating how Black people have used dance as a means of survival, resistance, and artistic expression across generations.
About The Festival
DANCEATSPELMAN is a three-day collegiate dance experience designed to welcome high school dancers to Spelman College. Through dance technique classes, performances, conversations, campus experiences, and admissions programming, students will have the opportunity to experience dance in a collegiate environment while exploring the connection between movement, identity, culture, and liberation.
Details and Logistics
We are pleased to invite you to engage with the Department of Dance Performance & Choreography. Below, you will find our registration form. The fall semester festival is specifically designed for high school Juniors and Seniors to gain insights into our department and the curriculum we offer, as well as to explore an interdisciplinary approach to liberal arts education ahead of the November 1st Early Action / Early Decision deadline. Please be aware that space is limited; once registration reaches capacity, a waitlist will be established. Individuals placed on the waitlist will be contacted only if a slot becomes available, with both registration and the waitlist following a first-come, first-served policy.

Department Mission Statement
Mission | Creativity Meets Critical Thoughts
Dance at Spelman is a critical and creative thinking laboratory that nurtures women of the African Diaspora. Students investigate intersections of experimental creative practices, cultural discourse, and technology. In keeping with the College's focus on social justice and innovation, the department's theory and composition classes fuse technology and womanist theory along with other social discourses. The curriculum centers on the choreographic process through the lens of Black feminist theories, contemporary dance techniques, and interdisciplinary collaborative practice.
