Harry S. Truman Scholarship

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation supports the graduate education and professional development of outstanding young people committed to public service leadership. Applicants should demonstrate extensive record of campus and community service, a high probability of becoming a "change agent" and strong academic record. The opportunity is open to students with junior-level academic standing; or senior-level standing in their third year of college enrollment.

How to Apply

The application process consists of online submissions to the Truman site and submission of your internal application to the Spelman Committee.  First complete the Domestic Competitive Awards Eligibility form. Once your eligibility is confirmed you will receive an email from Truman with instructions for completing your application on their dashboard. You will also be sent a link to the Prestigious Awards Canvas page where you will submit your application materials, listed below, by the fourth Monday in October. You are encouraged to work with a Faculty Mentor during the application process.

Your application materials should be Truman section of the Prestigious Awards Canvas page as PDFs and must include:

  • Draft of the full Truman application. Use the sample application on the website as a guide (if you use the word version of the sample Application and sample Policy Proposal remember to save as a PDF to submit with internal application form ).
  • A copy of unofficial transcript.
  • Current resume and head shot.

 

Recommendations

Three (3) letters of recommendation, one for each criteria listed below. Identify three individuals (faculty/staff/former supervisor) who can address one of the selection criteria, but it is acceptable for a letter to discuss more than one criteria.

  • Leadership Abilities and Potential
  • Commitment to a Career in Public Service
  • Intellect and Prospects for Continuing Academic Success.

 

You provided recommender information on the eligibility form, and they will receive a link from us to upload their recommendation letter. Please confirm their ability to provide a letter on your behalf and let them know the letters are due the last Friday in October. Applicants do not manage the recommendation process.

Interviews

  • Interviews are scheduled in early November. The Spelman Committee can select four (4) scholars to advance to the Truman Foundation for the final selection process. If you are selected to you will receive an email from the Foundation with the instructions on how to access the online application. Spelman is your primary point of contact, DO NOT contact the Truman Foundation directly regarding the fellowship.
