The Class of 2030 Enters Spelman’s Legacy of Excellence

More Than 650 Members of the Class Of 2030 Arrive on Campus Ready to Build on Spelman’s Legacy of Excellence, Leadership and Sisterhood

Students moving inThis week, Spelman College welcomed over 650 first-year students and their loved ones to campus during New Student Orientation 2026. Each year, NSO facilitates the smooth transition of new students to the Spelman community by introducing them to the College’s educational mission, history and unique opportunities.

Students during Induction CeremonyFrom August 12-18, students engaged in annual orientation activities, including “When and Where I Enter,” where they received an inspiring welcome from Spelman’s new President, Dr. Ayanna Howard; the Closing Celebration, an emotional gathering of first-year students and their loved ones marking a bittersweet start of a new chapter; Joint Convocation, a tradition that collectively joins Spelman and Morehouse College students together for the first time; and the Induction Ceremony, a time-honored tradition where new students, adorned in white, are officially welcomed into the illustrious Spelman sisterhood by alumnae.

Parent and student during closing ceremonyMany first-year students were first introduced to Spelman through the College’s Through the Gates Program, a summer success initiative that assists first-year students in their transition from high school to college. Sponsored by Spelman’s Student Success Program, Through the Gates features interactive workshops and provides an innovative way to bring the Spelman experience to incoming students. This year, 50% of the Class of 2030 attended Through the Gates in seven cities, including Atlanta, New York, Houston, Chicago and more.

This year, the College received over 13,500 applications for Fall 2026. With over 110 Valedictorians in this year’s applicant pool, Spelman continues to be a top choice for competitive applicants across the world. The College’s current acceptance rate is now 19%, a drop from 23.5% in 2025.

The Class of 2030 enters Spelman following another year of record-breaking selectivity, distinguished by their academic achievement, leadership and commitment to service,” said Chelsea Holley, director of admissions. “As interest in Spelman continues to grow, students from across the country and around the world are choosing a community that pairs academic excellence with a powerful sense of identity, purpose and belonging.”

The incoming class includes students from 36 states and U.S. territories and four foreign countries. This year, roughly 15% of incoming students are first-generation college students, meaning they will be the first in their families to earn a baccalaureate degree.

While Georgia residents make up 28% of the Class of 2030, the majority come from the Northeast and the South outside of Georgia. This year’s incoming class holds an average GPA of 3.95 with an average of 15 rigorous courses (AP, IB, honors) attempted in high school.

Top majors include biology, health science and political science.
