Class of 2026 Graduate Spotlight: Kendall Shelton

Kendall Shelton’s Unrelenting Faith Carries Her Through Spelman and Beyond

Class of 2026 Graduate Spotlight: Kendall Shelton

Kendall Shelton, C’2026, like many other Spelman scholars, is a clear example of what determination looks like. She possesses an unstoppable strength that has carried her through hardship.  Shelton has had to literally fight for her life to graduate from Spelman College. As challenging as her journey has been, she has remained steadfast.

LOVE AND LOSS

Originally from Little Rock, Arkansas, Shelton has come a long way to attend Spelman. Being the third oldest of eight children from a single mother, she’s no stranger to hard work. On a family trip to Atlanta at 13, she saw Spelman College for the first time and decided then that she’d achieve whatever it takes to get in. Sadly, that same year she lost her mother months later. This left her even more determined to bring her dream to fruition and honor the passion for academic excellence that her mother instilled deep within her.

Shelton thrived throughout high school, excelling academically while serving as cheer captain and earning a distinguished honors medal in JROTC. Her dedication paid off when she was accepted into Spelman College in December 2021 — a moment she eagerly shared with her father. Tragically, just one week later, he passed away. Even amid grief, Shelton pressed forward, determined to honor both parents by continuing her journey.

“I know my parents have been my guardian angels, protecting me the entire time,” Shelton said.

All of Shelton’s hard work paid off. She graduated with an impressive 3.9 GPA and earned a fullride Navy scholarship to cover her tuition — everything was finally coming together. However, prior to starting college, she attended basic training and was medically released due to preexisting conditions. As a result, her scholarship was rescinded, leaving her still Spelmanbound and in need of financial support.

MAKING A WAY

During her first semester at Spelman, Shelton hustled and secured another scholarship to replace the one she lost. On top of her courseload, she also started to do hair to cover her remaining living expenses. This was one of many things she had to do since she was an independent college student with no financial help.

Shelton persevered and made her way to her junior year. That February, while on her way to celebrate her late mother’s birthday, she and her boyfriend were victims of a road rage shooting. She witnessed 14 bullets tear through their car. Miraculously, both survived their injuries. Shelton remained in the hospital for three weeks. Her injuries instantly ended her ability to do hair, shattered her ambitions of opening her own salon, and forced her to take the rest of the semester off. Eventually, she recovered and returned to Spelman in the fall to complete her studies.

DESTINY FULFILLED

“God has a major calling on my life. He is not done with me yet,” Shelton said.

Now, she stands healed, whole, and ready to graduate as a Dean Dewitt Scholar with a degree in comparative women’s studies. It’s clear that despite all the adversity she has faced, Shelton remained undaunted by the fight and never let go of her dream. Now, she will be crossing the stage with the Class of 2026 and moving on to attend Louisiana State University in Shreveport for her MBA. No matter what life throws at her next, she is determined to remain driven by her faith and turn her trials into triumph –naturally like a Spelmanite would.
