Spelman College Screens Oscar-Nominated Documentary About Reproductive Justice
Spelman Students Moderate Panel with Soledad O’Brien and Christalyn Hampton
On February 2, Spelman College hosted a screening of the Oscar-nominated documentary film “The Devil Is Busy,” an HBO short focused on abortion access and reproductive rights. Following the screening, Spelman students moderated a Q&A with director Christalyn Hampton and executive producer Soledad O’Brien.
Shola Lynch, Diana King Endowed Professor of filmmaking and director of Spelman’s documentary film program, introduced the uplifting gathering and emphasized the deeply personal nature of the film. The Q&A discussion was moderated by Simone Hammond, C’2027, president of the Spelman Film Fusion club, and Lydia Scott, C’2027, the club’s vice president.
“The Devil Is Busy” is a 30-minute film shot from the perspective of the head of security at Atlanta’s Feminist Women’s Health Center as she navigates the legal restrictions surrounding reproductive freedom. The film was shot entirely by a crew of women of color, including Spelman alumnae Neema Griffin, C’2023, and Stephanie Crawford, C’2022.
