Spelman College Welcomes Students Back to Campus with Renovation of Two Historic Residence Halls

Updated Dorms Now Include Air Conditioning, Added Security and More

Spelman College recently reopened Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Hall and Morehouse-James Hall following renovations to transform the dorms into modern living spaces. The dorms were reconstructed to include central air conditioning and upgraded amenities as part of a larger effort to modernize the infrastructure of Spelman’s historic spaces.

These upgrades reflect our deep commitment to providing high-quality, modern living spaces for our students."

Morehouse-James, built in 1901 and last renovated in 1979, was completely reconstructed to include central air conditioning, a new layout, an elevator, a ground floor entrance and MicroFridge units in each room. To enhance campus safety, each dorm now features added electronic security and access measures.

MH James DormIn 2017, Abby was renovated for the first time since its opening in 1952. The first renovation included upgraded amenities with an emphasis on repair. While Abby’s layout remains the same following this most recent renovation, the building has been updated with central air conditioning, newly installed windows, a fresh coat of paint and renovated bathrooms.

Morehouse-James and Abby are among the oldest dorms on campus and were constructed before central air conditioning became standard. Currently, just two of the College’s eleven residence halls lack air conditioning following the completed renovation of Abby and Morehouse-James.

Spelman has made significant financial investments in the modernization of its campus and has implemented a multi-year strategic plan that includes new and renovated housing. As part of its broader commitment to provide high-quality, modern living spaces for its students, Spelman is scheduled to begin construction of a new 660-bed residence hall in May 2026.

Investing in our students is one of Spelman’s top priorities,” said Don Blackston, associate director of facilities projects at Spelman. “The planned design and construction of Spelman’s newest residence hall is part of a very strategic vision for the College to provide more housing options, provide quality living spaces for our students, and update the offices of Housing & Residence Life and Facilities Management & Services.”
