The College started with a $100 gift and a belief that education was a tool for liberation Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. Giles founded the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary Church.
1920’s-1950’s
The Second Reconstruction: The Collegiate Shift
Spelman’s transition from a seminary to a high-ranking liberal arts college. The building of “The Oval” and securing the first major endowments to ensure Spelman produced women prepared for leadership.
1980’s-2010’s
The Third Reconstruction: The Global Powerhouse
Spelman solidified its position as the #1 HBCU in the nation, dramatically increasing its endowment, expanding its global footprint, and becoming the nation’s leading producer of Black women in STEM.
