The Psychology of Black Womanhood Symposium is a groundbreaking scholarly and community‑engaged event that centers the psychological experiences, resilience, and lived realities of Black women in the United States. Hosted at Spelman College, the historic, Black women women‑led institution where the symposium’s founding co‑author Dr. Danielle Dickens teaches, the symposium draws upon the interdisciplinary work featured in The Psychology of Black Womanhood, co‑authored by Dr. Danielle Dickens and Dr. Dionne Stephens.

As a free, interactive, and inclusive gathering, the symposium features leading scholars, researchers, clinicians, and community thought‑leaders who explore topics ranging from mental health and wellbeing to cultural identity, embodiment, community connection, and Black feminist psychology. Presentations, workshops, panel discussions, and experiential activities are designed to foster dialogue, insight, and collective learning among attendees.

Key speakers at the event include Dr. Beverly Guy‑Sheftall, the Anna Julia Cooper Professor of Women’s Studies at Spelman College and a foundational figure in Black feminist scholarship; and Dr. Natalie Watson‑Singleton, an associate professor of psychology whose research and practice centers Black women’s health, wellness, and culturally relevant mental health interventions. Both bring deep expertise to the symposium’s discussions.

The program also highlights the contributions of Dr. Wendi S. Williams, the current President of the American Psychological Association, the largest professional organization representing psychology in the United States. Dr. Williams is a psychologist, educator, and advocate whose leadership emphasizes equity, wellness, and transformative change within psychology and beyond.

By amplifying Black women’s voices within psychological research, pedagogy, and community practice, the Psychology of Black Womanhood Symposium fosters connection, advances scholarship, and invites participants to engage deeply with the complexities, strengths, and joy of Black womanhood.
