Reflections on the Web: Muhsinah Morris, Ph.D., Metaversity Director, Morehouse College
"Without your faith in me, I never would have thrived!" I wrote this to Dr. Nripendra Bose, my mentor, my friend, my colleague, my brother as he retired from Spelman College where we both worked. I found out that he had transitioned from this life to the next. It has taken me time to process that the love I experienced from him was now in a different form. I want to take this time to say Thank you to the man who saw ME.
Dr. Bose saw me and my striving towards excellence. He saw my faith and we talked for hours about God. He gifted me his Bhagavad Gita which I still have on my book shelf. He brought me back beautiful gifts from India, a scarf and bracelet which I wear often. He gave me his lab to do research in when I was yet a lecturer because he believed in my potential. He said he wouldn't stop believing in me and advocating for me until I was tenured in the AUC.
Unfortunately, that never happened but he did share in my other successes with research and parenthood. He also got to see my youngest baby be born and know of him.
He was a man who always kept his hand on me and his thoughts of me very high. He was kind and brutally honest but he stood in the gap for me in so many ways. I was a raw chemistry professional with lofty dreams and he let me know that I needed to slow down because my life mattered more than what I wanted to achieve.
He shared his own story of having a heart attack with me which made him rethink his priorities and warned me that while my work ethic was superior, I mattered more. He shared his culture. He shared his space. He shared his heart. For that, I am forever grateful to have been loved by him. Some people are not just colleagues, they are friends, angels who watch over you in times of need.
Dr. Bose, thank you for being assigned to me as my angel. I pray you rest in heavenly peace. I send my heartfelt condolences out to his son and wife. He was a jewel of a human being and no differences ever mattered. When he looked through me, he saw my soul and he poured life into me in every way. He was a mighty human being!"
