Semester Study Abroad Application Steps

Important Semester Study Abroad Message: The Semester Study Abroad Application Cycle for J-Term 2027, Summer 2027, Fall 2027, and Spring 2028 opens Fall 2026. If your major requires a study abroad, the deadline is Oct. 1, 2026. These details do not apply to two-week or department-led programs.

Application Deadlines:
J-Term 2027 – November 1, 2026
Summer 2027 – February 1, 2027
Fall 2027 – February 1, 2027
Spring 2028 term – February 1, 2027*

*International Studies and Foreign Languages majors may submit applications by October 1, 2027. Contact Dr. Karen Clay at kclay2@spelman.edu for assistance with application steps.

Steps to Semester Study Abroad for Fall and Spring students:

  1. Review the Semester Study Abroad Requirements for study abroad eligibility.
  2. Determine the courses required for the semester of travel by either consulting with your Department Chair/Academic Advisor or checking your course sequence sheet.
  3. Access Semester Programs to research and determine one study abroad program that aligns with your academic goals and required courses.
  4. Contact Semester Study Abroad for semester study abroad program advisement or questions at studyabroad@spelman.edu.
  5. Submit a Preliminary Application for Semester Study Abroad, which includes a proposed course plan that will be routed to your Department Chair for approval.
  6. Once your Preliminary Application has been approved, you can complete the full Semester Study Abroad Application by returning to the Program Provider brochure on the Terra Dotta site.
  7. Apply to the Program Provider or International Exchange Partner.
  8. Continue with the remaining Pre-departure requirements following acceptance into the Spelman Study Abroad Program.

Steps to Semester Study Abroad for Summer students:

  1. Review the Semester Study Abroad Requirements for study abroad eligibility.
  2. Determine the courses required for the semester of travel by either consulting with your Department Chair/Academic Advisor or checking your course sequence sheet. If you are seeking to take a course or courses for enrichment, you must also seek approval and follow the semester study abroad steps.
  3. Access Semester Programs to research and determine one study abroad program that aligns with your academic goals and required courses.
  4. Contact Semester Study Abroad for semester study abroad program advisement or questions at studyabroad@spelman.edu.
  5. Submit a Preliminary Application for Semester Study Abroad, which includes a proposed course plan that will be routed to your Department Chair for approval.

Steps to Semester Study Abroad for J-Term students:

  1. Review the Semester Study Abroad Requirements for study abroad eligibility.
    • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, based on at least two completed semesters prior to applying
  2. Determine the courses required for the semester of travel by either consulting with your Department Chair/Academic Advisor or checking your course sequence sheet. If you are seeking to take a course or courses for enrichment, you must also seek approval and follow the semester study abroad steps.
  3. Access Semester Programs to research and determine one study abroad program that aligns with your academic goals and required courses.
  4. Contact Semester Study Abroad for semester study abroad program advisement or questions at studyabroad@spelman.edu.
  5. Submit a Preliminary Application for Semester Study Abroad, which includes a proposed course plan that will be routed to your Department Chair for approval.
