Nurturing Knowledge, Shaping Futures: A Collaborative Pedagogical Approach to Creating the First Maternal and Child Health Course at Spelman College
Dr. Shantesica Gilliam, Environmental and Health Sciences Department

Maternal and child health is a critical study area that requires innovative research, policy, and practice approaches. This study aims to understand the educational and professional development needs of Spelman students interested in Maternal and Child Health. A need analysis through on-campus community dialogue and a survey was conducted to understand the knowledge and skills most needed for students to excel in maternal and child health. Findings from the needs analysis will be used to advance Spelman’s maternal and child health capacity through interdisciplinary learning, student engagement, tailored education, and increased maternal health advocacy. A comprehensive maternal and child health course will be developed to be taught in Spring 2025 in partnership and collaboration with Spelman undergraduate students.

Teaching French for Medical Purposes
Dr. Sophie Vainer, World Languages and Cultures

The new class, “Medical French,” was created to help future medical workers from different backgrounds in a francophone environment. The goal of the new manual I am creating is to give tangible tools to allow communication in French and reach out to patients in different parts of the world. It is a reminder to our students that languages represent a door to new opportunities while increasing chances to get a new job or internship. The number of French speakers is going to increase, especially due to the growing population in Africa.
