Obtaining a Committee Letter

Congratulations on getting to this point of your journey! The committee letter is authored by a pre-health committee or pre-health advisor and provides an overall summary of you as an applicant, describing your academic preparedness, your scholarly activities, community service, leadership skills and clinical exposures. The letter will also include additional letters written in support of your application. This is sometimes called a composite letter.

We recommend you go through the process of obtaining a committee letter if you plan to apply to medical school, dental school or any school that requires the letter. This will ensure you have a comprehensive letter that speaks to your competitiveness and unique experience at our institution.

Please contact healthcareers@spelman.edu if you have any questions.

Deadline

Will be March 15

Form and documents: March 15
Committee Review: April, May, July

The Five-Step Process

  1. Make the decision to obtain a committee letter and identify three to five recommenders.
  2. Complete the Health Council Applicants Form needed to start the process.
    • On your Health Professional School application (i.e. AMCAS, AADSAS, ACOMAS, etc.), choose committee letter, and add Dr. Rosalind Gregory-Bass, rbass@spelman.edu
  3. Health Council reviews student profiles at the monthly meetings when at least three recommendations are submitted.
  4. Notification of a decision comes one week after the monthly meeting. If approved for a letter, provide the committee with the AMCAS, AADSAS, TMDSAS, ACOMAS, PTCAS, PHARMCAS, OPTMCAS or SOPHAS recommendation link.
  5. The Committee Letter is uploaded to application service in June, August and September after you have submitted your health professional school application. You must notify the office of your submission at healthcareers@spelman.edu.
