Margery Ganz, Ph.D., Honored for Contributions to Study Abroad

April 2017

Margery Ganz
Margery Ganz, Ph.D., director of the Office of Study Abroad and International Exchange and professor of history, recently was awarded the Peter A. Wollitzer Advocacy Award at the 2017 Forum on Study Abroad Conference for her decades of commitment to education abroad. Also at the conference, she was honored by DIS – Study Abroad in Scandinavia for fostering the long-standing partnership between Spelman and DIS. Throughout her career, Dr. Ganz has been a strong advocate of diversity in international education – mentoring students, serving on numerous boards and speaking about issues facing students of color at the Forum and other conferences.

In her 36 years at Spelman, Dr. Ganz has transformed the College’s study abroad programming. When she arrived on campus in 1981, Spelman only sent two students abroad per year. In 2016, 402 students participated in semester and faculty-led programs. The College now has more students of color participating in undergraduate study abroad programs and conducting high-level research than any other school in the country. In addition, she is a champion of Spelman Going Global, a College initiative that is the recipient of the 2017 Senator Paul Simon Spotlight Award on Engagement in Internationalization. Dr. Ganz will retire from Spelman on July 30.
