Ayana D. Hernandez, C’97, was appointed as interim associate vice chancellor for strategic communications by Elizabeth City State University.
In her new role, Hernandez will manage all marketing, media, and brand management strategies while leading the execution and evaluation of the university’s internal and external communications. This plan is scheduled to be implemented by Hernandez’s new creative vision for the strategic communications division, as well as her production of an innovative – yet proactive – branding strategy set to highlight university strengths, ambitions, engagement, and its national profile.
Following her time at Spelman, Hernandez earned a Master of Arts degree in journalism and mass communications from New York University. Before joining ECSU in July 2022, Hernandez enjoyed a fruitful career at North Carolina Central University. She started as the director of public relations in 2012 before becoming the special assistant to the university’s chancellor.
Hernandez is not only an award-winning communications professional, but has worked with other notable organizations such as FleishmanHillard International Communications, Essence Magazine and the North Carolina Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.
