As the Spelman and Morehouse Glee Clubs prepare to ring in the holidays with the 92nd Annual Christmas Carol Concert, No. 30 – Dec. 2, Spelman College pauses to celebrate Kevin Johnson, DMD, associate professor and Glee Club director. This year marks the 20th year that Dr. Johnson has served as the director of the Glee Club.
Dr. Kevin Johnson is a musician, a composer, and an active clinician. The director of the Spelman College Glee Club has traveled through the United States, providing choral workshops and retreats for music educators and churches. In his professional career as a thriving musician, Dr. Kevin Johnson is the minister of music at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Atlanta. He is also one of the most highly demanded and prominent musicians in the Archdiocese of Atlanta and the Catholic Archdiocese nationwide.
“In retrospect, my 20 years in service to Spelman have been filled with joy,” said Dr. Johnson, who teaches choral conducting, music theory and music technology. As director, he has been instrumental in increasing the ensemble’s visibility and musicality due to his close attention to detail and passion for musicianship.
“As a young, aspiring doctoral candidate, I hoped to become a conductor at a large, majority institution for mixed voices. God had another plan for me and for my future,” said Dr. Johnson. “I have been able to be part of the elevation of our institutions and of women of color to renowned and unmatched importance on the world. For this, I am grateful.”
