Sexual Misconduct Climate Survey

Campus sexual assaults are a persistent epidemic among colleges and universities. Women surpass men in college enrollment, yet they continue to be at risk for gender-based violence including, sexual violence, intimate partner violence and stalking.

The National Institute of Justice documents that 1 in 5 women are victims of completed or attempted sexual assault while in college and the Bureau of Justice statistics indicates that young women ages 20‐24 are at the highest risk for intimate partner violence while young women ages 18‐24 are at highest risk of stalking. The National Center on Violence Against Women in the Black Community notes that 35% of Black women experienced some form of sexual violence during their lifetime.

Spelman College is committed to changing that narrative for our community. We conducted a climate survey in 2017 and it is time to reassess the landscape. The Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization Act of 2022 states that colleges and universities receiving federal funding will be required to administer campus climate surveys every two years on issues of dating/domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and stalking.

Our goal is always to go beyond compliance, so we are conducting a campus climate survey this semester and requesting your participation!

This confidential survey is designed to help us learn more about your experiences as it relates to sexual misconduct in order to stay committed to providing a safe, healthy, and welcoming environment.

All students will be emailed a link to the survey from the college and those who complete the survey will be eligible for some great incentives.

What is the Sexual Misconduct Survey?

The sexual misconduct survey is a questionnaire designed to gather information about student experiences around dating/domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and stalking. The survey data will help Spelman College identify needs as well as enhance policies and programs for students.
Who is being asked to complete the survey?

All current Spelmanites who are 18 years and older.
Are there incentives for taking the survey?

The biggest incentive is helping us make Spelman a safer place, but of course we have the goods! Every student who completes the survey will receive an opportunity to be entered into a drawing for an amazing prize, i.e., Apple watch, Apple earbuds, free parking.
What survey instrument is Spelman College utilizing?

Spelman Collee is utilizing the ARC3 survey which is an evidence-based survey that was developed by researchers with expertise in gender-based violence in close collaboration with administrators who specialize in Title IX, student conduct, counseling, housing, and victim services.
I have not experienced sexual harassment or any sexual misconduct, should I still take the survey?

Absolutely. The College is interested in all experiences.
How do I take the survey?

How long will the survey take to complete?

The survey, on average, takes no more than 30 minutes to complete. Please note, the time spent for you to complete the survey is invaluable as it will help the College make significant changes.
I started the survey, but had to stop, so can I still access it?

Absolutely. The survey will pick up where you left off.
