My Sister's Closet
My Sister’s Closet is an
SSGA initiative that was started in 2009 by the then secretary of student affairs to provide gently worn or used clothing at no charge to Spelman students experiencing financial difficulties. Since its inception, the space has allowed students to come and get needed clothing from professional clothing to formal attire to traditional white dresses without feeling stigmatized for receiving donated clothes.
The initiative was greeted with overwhelming response and support. As soon as word about my My Sister’s Closet spread throughout campus, students began to visit the area regularly.
Spelman alumna Stacey Mason stated, “I am so pleased with the joyous responses from alumnae, faculty, staff and students who have donated to this great initiative. Each person who has helped with My Sister’s Closet should know they have played a tremendous role in helping out our Spelman sisters.”
