Erin Grier, C'2024, a junior English major with a minor in film studies and visual culture, spent her summer serving as a correspondence intern for Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris.
"It was an amazing eight weeks of personal and professional growth. I am so thankful for the formative knowledge and support system I have gained over the past two years at Spelman, which gave me the confidence to take on this prestigious position," said Grier.
The Acworth, Georgia native added, "It was an honor to represent my institution in a space where important decisions are being made each day and a privilege to work for Vice President Harris, a woman who has made history and inspired millions through her dedication and tenacious spirit. This was a role I never imagined myself in, but I am so grateful to have had it. Getting the chance to serve others in such a unique way has truly inspired me, and I am excited to bring the valuable lessons I have learned with me as I continue my education at Spelman."
Outside of classes and working as a tutor in Spelman’s Comprehensive Writing Center, Grier is a member of S.K.I.R.T.S. (Sisters Keeping It Real Through Service), a community service organization. As a member of the Mini S.K.I.R.T.S branch of the club, she mentors young girls at Barack and Michelle Obama Academy in Atlanta each week, and teaches them the importance of mental health, goal-setting, and self-confidence. She is also a member of the Granddaughters Club (as a legacy of her mother, Rhonda Grier, C'87) and SpelmanWrites, a club for creative writers.
Grier is passionate about storytelling in its many forms, and after completing her undergraduate degree, she plans on working in the publishing industry as a literary agent and developmental editor. She would ultimately like to publish novels of her own and start her own publishing company to amplify the voices of Black writers.
