Getting Started

The Counseling Center offers a variety of services for Spelman College students.

  • To get started at the Counseling Center, please call 404-270-5293
  • For counseling emergencies during office hours (Monday ­- Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding College holidays and some breaks), please call the Counseling Center at 404-270-5293, and ask to speak with a counselor
  • For after-hours emergencies, please call the front desk at 404-270-5293, and follow the prompts
  • Life-threatening emergencies may be reported to Public Safety at 404-525-6401, or 911 if you are off campus 

What to Expect

You will be asked to complete paperwork and will meet briefly with a triage counselor. This is an opportunity for the triage counselor to learn about your situation and determine your needs. The counselor will make a referral for on- or off-campus services—whatever is most appropriate for you.

Plan

Complete the intake paperwork on your Medicat Portal.

Meet with a clinician by phone or HIPPA compliant Zoom and co-create a wellness plan with services that are best for your unique circumstances. These services could include:

  • Self-help resource such as TAO
  • Groups
  • Individual Counseling
  • Campus and Community Resources

Act

  • Commit to your personalized wellness plan developed with your clinician.
  • Attend all scheduled Counseling Center appointments, groups, and/or workshops.
  • Follow up with any recommended campus or community resources.
  • Practice and maintain self-help skills and tasks.

Generally, students should be aware that:

  • Sessions could be disrupted, delayed, or communications distorted due to technical failures.
  • Remote counseling involves alternative forms of communication, which may reduce auditory cues and increase the likelihood of misunderstanding one another.
  • State laws govern the practice of remote counseling for licensed mental health clinicians. Counseling Center staff adhere to all applicable laws and guidelines in the provision of remote counseling services.
