Spelman College Museum of Fine Art

For more than eighty years, Spelman College has championed the arts and shaped an impressive collection of artworks from the African Diaspora through the generosity of alumnae, artists, trustees, and Friends of the College. Our holdings include works by emerging, mid-career, and established artists. The Spelman College collection also reflects the institution’s sustained commitment to artists in the Atlanta University Center.
The Arc of the Spelman College Collection looks at four pivotal moments in the collecting history of the College: its early collecting efforts, the Atlanta University Center Coordinated Art Program, the impetus to acquire works by Black women artists, and its ascent as a world class institution. Artists featured in this exhibition include a combination of acquisitions and gifts of works by Emma Amos, Selma Burke, Jacob Lawrence, Lucille Malkia Roberts, Lina Iris Viktor, Barrington Watson, and many others.
The Arc grew from this unprecedented time in our collective history where we are all being called upon to reflect on our legacies. This exhibition encourages and emboldens the Spelman Museum to think critically about the ways in which it has and can continue to serve its communities and make its holdings more accessible.
