On Thursday, Jan. 24, Stacey Abrams, C’95, received the 2018-19 Local Community Service Award.
Every year, the Spelman College Board of Trustees recognizes a leader who exemplifies the importance of service.
"This year we recognize a local leader who has become a national and international hero,” said Spelman President Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D., during her introduction of Abrams. “She made us reach higher than we dared reach before."
During her remarks, Abrams announced that her non-profit organization, Fair Fight Georgia, would visit Spelman soon to recruit volunteers to help end voter suppression. “Part of the cost of trying hard, you might win a moral victory but not get the prize – yet,” she said. “We won. We won change. We won opportunity. We have leaders who have to look over their shoulders every day because they know we are coming.” Taylor Roberts, C’2019, and Henrietta Turnquest, C’68, provided the welcome and occasion respectively during the program.
