Shadowing Opportunities

Health Careers Shadowing Opportunities The Women in Science & Health (WISH) Shadowing Program offers experiential clinical and research opportunities to Spelman students for professional preparation that contributes to a student’s career, personal, intellectual and ethical development with our partnered clinicians. Fieldwork assignments offer an opportunity to develop sustainable clinical and public health partnerships in which students receive hands-on training to develop professional skills, provide technical assistance, develop programs and conduct research to address community concerns.

Health Careers Shadowing OpportunitiesThe Health Careers Program has collaborated with health professionals from varied specialties and organizations such as dermatology, internal medicine, chiropractic care, public health, dentistry, physical therapy, obstetrics & gynecology, pediatrics, etc. In these collaborative agreements, our partners agree to provide our students with extensive exposure in fields of healthcare which students gain proficiency in skill development effective communication, altruism, civic service, and emotional intelligence. Electing to participate in shadowing experiences, Spelman students are highly recognized for their diverse training in the application process for admissions to health professional institutions.

Clinical Skills Lab

Clinical Skills LabThe Clinical Skills lab is available for the benefit of students to develop clinical skills prior to matriculation into health professional school. The lab is equipped with two mannequins for simulated patient education and varied lab models to provide education and training in blood pressure checks and gynecological, breast and prostate examinations utilizing lab models. The lab is also a suite that serves as a central location with projection capability accessible from classroom for lab instruction. These experiential learning opportunities are offered in a protected environment for all Spelman learners to enhance their skills set in preparation for professional healthcare training.

Sister 2 Sister Professional Mentoring Program

Sister 2 SisterThe Sister 2 Sister Professional Mentoring Program (S2S) provides learning and continuous personal and professional development opportunities for the student participants, through their interactions with their assigned alumnae mentors in addition to their participation in professional development seminars. S2S is an initiative of the Spelman College Strategic Plan 2017: Strengthening the Core. The program launched during the 2011-2012 academic year and was designed to ultimately match 125 alumnae with 125 students in professional development mentoring relationships.

Meet & Greet 

Practicum/Shadowing Meet & Greet The “Practicum/Shadowing Meet & Greet” is an opportunity for clinicians to acquaint with the Health Careers & Health Sciences Program at Spelman College to learn more about opportunities for students to work with them in fulfilling shadowing hours in preparation for health profession school admissions. Preceptors from all specialties (public health, medicine, nursing, dentistry, physical & occupational therapy) will learn of program and academic offerings for our pre-health students  and ways they can become more engaged as well as meet the Program leadership and team. Students will develop their networking skills and learn of the partnerships available to them through the Practicum & Internship course for Health Science majors and the Health Careers Program.
