First-Generation Scholars Program

First-Generation (1st Gens) Scholars Program

Spelman’s First-Generation (1st Gens) Scholars program is a student organization devoted to providing academic and personal support for students who identify as first-generation college students.

Who Are 1st Gens?

A first-generation college student is defined as a student from those families in which neither parent has earned a four-year undergraduate degree. 1st Gen scholars have the opportunity to participate in various professional and academic development seminars, support group meetings, and bonding events.

Start of QuoteFirst Gens are AMAZING! We’re literally breaking into new territory not only for ourselves but for our children and grandchildren. I love that I can talk about my experiences and one of myEnd of Quote sisters can relate to what I am saying. I’m constantly empowered by Dr. Tarshia Stanley and thankful for all of her encouragement.
