Three documentaries that chronicle the experiences of women of color were screened at the Ninth Annual Spelman College Digital Moving Image Salon Student Documentary Film Showcase on April 25, 2013.
Presented by Spelman students, each of the documentaries were conceptualized, researched and filmed during the school year. In keeping with DMIS’ focus on digital media platforms, the films were prepared for viewing on mobile platforms such as smartphones and tablets, as well as for movie theaters and TV.
2013 Student Documentaries
Rima’s Red Raincoat, the story of Rima Dali, a lawyer who sparked a nonviolent movement in the Syrian Revolution through performance art in public spaces.

Darlings Silver Lining, a portrait of a talented female artist who struggles with homelessness while also trying to come to terms with a history of abuse.

Running for My Life, a profile of three African-American women who took control of their physical and mental health by learning to run and changing their diets.

DMIS Moving Image Award
In addition to the screenings, The DMIS Moving Image Award was presented to Shilla Benning, costume designer for film and television. Benning is a well-respected, Atlanta-based costume designer and stylist.
Her work can be seen in the films Single Ladies, Footloose, One Missed Call, several Tyler Perry films and the TV mini-series Wedding. She is one of a small handful of African-American women costume designers who have consistently worked in the film and television industries for more than 25 years.
