Sad News of the passing of Princess Yates, C'2019

August 9, 2017

Dear Spelman Community:

In recent weeks, Spelman College has obtained additional information on the life of Princess Yates, C'2019, who passed away July 21. I write now to pay tribute to her in the manner her life deserves.

Princess was an activist who led a purpose-filled life giving back to the community. She spent a semester at Spelman as an environmental science, dual degree engineering major, who volunteered with the Environmental Protection Agency. As co-founder of the Staten Island NAACP Youth Council, she served as the organization's secretary for their youth week. Her work with the Young, Talented and Gifted organization included assisting high school students with college applications and organizing events that promoted civil rights awareness.

I have heard from numerous members of the Spelman community who loved Princess. They shared with me her deep intelligence, vibrant personality, beautiful soul and active involvement in organizations that enriched the lives of others.

Her family treasures their strong memories of Princess as a kind and loving person who cared about others, would go out of her way for her family and friends, and spoke out about issues related to human rights and the environment.

Princess embodied the Spelman woman, making a choice to change the world.

The Spelman community honors her life and extends our condolences and prayers to her family and friends.

Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D.
