Spelman Mourns the Loss of Two Students

July 27, 2017

Dear Spelman Community,

With sadness, I share news of the recent passing of Erica Lanier, C’2018, in Atlanta, and former student Princess Yates, C’2019, in Liberia.

Erica, an education studies major, had been actively involved with several organizations in the Atlanta community including Girls In Technology, Junior Achievement and Operation PEACE. Committed to bettering the education system in Georgia, she was an afterschool teacher at Greenforest Christian Academy and founded Gifted Girls of Grace to promote sisterhood, etiquette, culture and self-empowerment among young women. She also completed internships with Breakthrough Atlanta and Uncommon, and was a member of the Morehouse College dance team, Mahogany in Motion.

Princess was an environmental science, dual degree engineering major during the time she spent at Spelman.

We extend our condolences and prayers to Erica's sister, Deanna Lanier, C'2020, and to the families of Erica and Princess.

With sympathy,

Mary Schmidt Campbell, Ph.D.
